Building Connections with UX Designers and Creatives
Salt Lake City served as an inviting backdrop for Front 2024. While the downtown area felt quieter than I expected, the people I met were incredibly friendly and welcoming. The Rose Wagner Theater provided a spacious and relaxed venue for the roughly 300 attendees, primarily UX designers and project managers. Though smaller in scale than past years, the intimate crowd allowed for plenty of organic networking, fueled by great coffee from event sponsor Underbelly. Conversations flowed easily in the open spaces, creating an ideal setting for connecting with fellow professionals.
UX Design Insights from Front Utah 2024
Several key themes emerged at Front Utah 2024, including the importance of building trust, delivering delight, and creating emotional connections with users. A common thread was the need to design for both value and familiarity, ensuring that users feel at ease while navigating digital experiences.
One of the most memorable sessions for me was the keynote from John Dilworth and Leigh Lyman of Lucid Software. Leigh, a UX designer and manager, focused on the concept of friction in the user journey—specifically, how to reduce it to improve overall engagement. She introduced a practical model, called the Friction Model, she used while working at Ancestry. This model draws from the Keystroke Level Model (KLM), breaking down a user’s actions into steps and assigning a friction point to each one. The goal is to calculate a baseline friction score and use design improvements to reduce unnecessary effort for users.
By analyzing these friction points, Leigh’s team was able to refine user flows and reduce obstacles, resulting in smoother interactions and improved usability. This method not only increased user satisfaction but also boosted overall engagement. Hearing Leigh break down this friction analysis approach was particularly insightful, as it provided a structured, data-driven way to enhance the user experience by focusing on reducing physical and mental barriers.
Building Community and Exploring UX Trends
More than just a chance to gain knowledge, Front Utah 2024 was an opportunity to reconnect with the UX community. The diverse backgrounds and perspectives of the attendees made for lively discussions, and there was a collective enthusiasm about where the design world is heading. From reducing friction to building deeper emotional connections, the insights shared will undoubtedly shape the future of UX as we continue to innovate at the intersection of design, technology, and user expectations.
Looking Ahead: What’s Next for UX After Front Utah 2024?
Looking ahead, I’m excited to see what the Front Utah team has in store for next year’s event. I’m also curious to learn more about their UX & Product Management Workshop Series, scheduled for later this year, which promises even more hands-on learning opportunities. While details are still forthcoming, I’m sure it will be another can’t-miss event, given the quality of this year’s conference.
